Saskatchewan Rivers MLA Nadine Wilson cuts a cake with Cliff Herzog, a retired Saskatchewan Parks Service employee, at Emma Lake on Friday in recognition of the one-year anniversary of the Great Blue Heron Provincial Park.

Marking the Anglin Lake and Emma Lake-centred Great Blue Heron Provincial Park’s one-year anniversary, the province opted to improve area campgrounds.

Two campgrounds located in the park -- Anderson Point and Murray Point campgrounds -- are undergoing electrical expansions and upgrades.

By the end of the summer, 35 non-electric campsites at the Anderson Point Campground will be made electrical and 29 existing campsites in Murray Point Campground will be eclectically upgraded.

Costing the province between $238,000 and $273,000, Saskatchewan Rivers MLA Nadine Wilson said that it’s all in keeping up with demand.

“Most of Saskatchewan Rivers has beautiful campsites, and this is just in addition to meet the need of what the campers are saying,” she said. “We’re a growing province and we want a better quality of life for everyone’s so I think it’s a great situation to be in.”

Wilson attended a small celebration at the Anderson Point Campground on Friday to mark the park’s one-year anniversary. During its first year, Wilson reports 87,581 visits.

Province-wide, 2013 saw the provincial park system set a record 3.7 million visits.

“Tourism and parks are very important to the culture of Saskatchewan,” Wilson said, commending the Great Blue Heron Provincial Park for its excellent “family orientated” atmosphere.

The Saskatchewan Rivers electoral riding is packed with campgrounds – a facet of her job she takes in stride.

“My summer job is very nice -- driving around to attend the park events and celebrate with the campers.”
