Crystal Tkach, who spent a lot of her childhood in Prince Albert, is putting on a dance workshop this summer and is offering students the chance to win one of 20 $275 scholarships.
“Why I’m doing it is just to offer something back to the community and surrounding areas,” she said. “I did get a sponsorship, a generous one, from PotashCorp, so I can offer 20 $275 scholarships.”
The scholarship would cover the cost of a six-day workshop in one of four locations during the month of July -- in Prince Albert at PhysioFit, Lanigan at Dance Dynamics, Warman Dance Club or in Shellbrook at Rhythm Works Dance.
“They can register to attend the workshop and by either writing a 300-word essay or submitting a video … they have a chance to win a spot and the $275 which would cover their tuition,” Tkach said.
Tkach has 15 years of professional dance experience, 10 on faculty with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
“It is going to be an amazing experience,” she said. “It is something different and it is something fun. Also it gives another option.”
Since most of the dance workshops are held in August, she said this would give dancers the opportunity to attend a second one and still be able to attend their usual summer school.
Tkach also stressed that it is important to learn from as many instructors as possible.
“You don’t have to be a super elite dancer -- I accept people of all different levels,” she said. “It is important to take (dance lessons) from other instructors. You are not betraying your dance teacher if you come to another dance workshop.
“If you love dance, than love it with any kind of teacher.”
Those interested in registering for the workshop and entering to win one of the scholarships Tkach can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org. Application forms can also be obtained by contacting one of the four venues or at the website http://crystaltkach.wix.com/hifidancearts. Deadline for entries is June 14.
