You’d be hard pressed to find an adult as enthused about picking up garbage as the Queen Mary Community School students seen beautifying the city on Thursday.

“It’s good for them to get out of the community and help out,” teacher Niki Johnson said of the group gingerly picking up trash on 14th Street West. “It’s good for them to be more hands-on.”

“It’s good for them to see all the garbage that is collected through the spring, because it shows them and encourages them to stop littering,” fellow teacher Leann Chester said.

“A few of them have pointed out, ‘Where did all this garbage come from?’ -- Well it accumulates when you throw it during winter.”

The youngsters picking up trash did so as part of Coun. Charlene Miller’s west flat area contribution to Pitch-In Week, during which she heads out with students, seniors and other volunteers to clean up her ward.

Things are going “Excellent,” Miller said midway through the spring clean.

“We’re done right to 14th Street, and tomorrow morning we’re finishing up the back alley of 12th Street, and tomorrow afternoon we’re starting on 13th Street with the kids.

“They’ve worked hard and they deserve their slushes in the end from Sylken Confectionary -- He donates every year to the kids.”

There are still two more days of cleaning scheduled, Miller said, directing those interested in helping out to attend the Parkland Hall for direction on Friday and Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

Both days will include a noon-hour break, during which volunteers will be provided with lunch.

The Downtown Improvement District Association office is heading a citywide cleanup, providing garbage bags to those interested in helping out. Their office is located at 1105 Central Avenue and can be contacted at 306-763-1802.
