Many in the Prince Albert downtown area may have noticed a huge hole in the middle of Ninth Street, between Central Avenue and First Avenue East.

One citizen, Patrick Fairbairn, is concerned about the safety issues surrounding the “sinkhole.”

“The sinkhole is right across from the daycare centre parking lot, where the Co-op used to be,” Fairbairn said. “I walked by there this morning and there were no safety barricades around there or fencing-type material. I saw little children walking down the sidewalk with their mothers -- what is to stop them from being like, ‘What’s that?’ and (falling in).”

According to Wes Hicks, capital projects manager for the city, the hole is there due to repairs that need to be made, including a water main break.

“The hole has got to be about seven or eight feet deep and there is water running through it,” Fairbairn said. “It is a danger and a hazard waiting to happen.

“I’m really concerned that they aren’t taking consideration of people’s safety,” he added. “I also witnessed a lot of traffic running up and down on both sides of this hole, even though they had one sign up saying road closed. Nobody is paying attention to that but I am more concerned about the safety of children and the people maybe out there at night when it is dark.”

Fairbairn spoke to the city on Friday before coming down to the Herald. A few hours after he left, city workers were out at the sinkhole, fixing the barricades that had been blown down by the wind and putting some more safety measures into place.

“There are barricades there and there are sandbags blocking the hole,” Hicks said.

Fairbairn would have liked to see a little more safety barricades put into place.

“Any other city I’ve lived in … a hole that size they would have chain link fencing about seven feet high, wrap around that construction site and signs around it saying beware or something,” he said.

Hicks said that repairs on the sinkhole will be taking place on Tuesday.

Obviously, the city is not taking too many precautions here. Poor management altogether. But that's PA for you.
