Artistic support at annual juried show and sale

Calling this year’s Winter Festival Juried Art Show their best yet, Mann Art Gallery curator Griffith Aaron Baker credits a supportive community for its success.

A whopping 198 pieces of art have filled the gallery -- work that highlights the talent of 106 artists from across Saskatchewan, though mainly from the Prince Albert area, he said.

“I don’t know of another gallery (where) literally every work that’s submitted will find a place to hang,” he said, noting that almost every wall within the building has been blanketed with art.

“That means you’ll get everything, from hobbyist artists who have been maybe working for 20, 30 years, to professional artists with academic training, to people who’ve just taken it up this year or last year.”

Wading through the almost 200 pieces of art to narrow in on winners were artists Levi Nicholat and Donald Roach -- a duo who recently took ownership of The Gallery / Art Placement Inc., a commercial art gallery and art consultation service in Saskatoon.

“We were very impressed by the quality of work submitted,” Nicholat said on Saturday.

“And the talent that’s apparent in the city -- there are so many amazing artists,” Roach said, adding that it appears on par or perhaps even greater than what he’s seen in Saskatoon.

For the judicial duo, Friday’s gala event was the No. 1 highlight of the festival, during which 200 members of the community came together to celebrate the local arts community, including a number of city councillors and Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens.

“That’s amazing,” Roach said. “Those are numbers you’ll get at much larger galleries, for receptions.”

The support continued on Saturday, when Nicholat and Roach spent three hours speaking with artists, during which they explained why certain pieces received awards while others did not.

“There were people here at 10 a.m. when the talk started, and they stayed right through the three hours that it went -- interested to hear and have discussions with us and ask questions,” Nicholat said.

“The level of engagement of the arts community is really wonderful around here.”

With the number of participants increasing year over year, Baker notes that the level of artistic engagement appears to be on the increase in Prince Albert.

So far, about 20 pieces of art from the expansive display have sold, of which 10 purchases were made by the Mann Art Gallery for their permanent collection -- action Nicholat called “amazing.”

“People support this gallery, but the gallery also works to support the artistic community, so it’s a really nice relationship that they have here,” he concluded.

In addition to sharing constructive criticism with Prince Albert area artists on Saturday, both judges shared insights on the field of artisanship in general.

“I think the most important thing that people need to learn is, to find a good reason for making your art and try not to be making your art for the wrong reasons,” Roach said.

“I think the wrong reasons are things like fame and wealth and things like that, because it’s such a rare thing. If it happens, great, but you need to find a real love and joy of making it -- that’s the most important thing.”

The 38th Annual Winter Festival Juried Art Show and Sale will remain on display at the Mann Art Gallery until March 22, during which time members of the public are encouraged to vote for the piece they wish to receive the Guy Rutter Memorial Award (people’s choice award).

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.

Thank you for this great article. This was my first submission to any shows since my husband and I moved to Meacham in the fall. I was amazed and overwhelmed by the generosity of encouragement and awards offered. As well it was a joy to be around so many artists and to have the incredible opportunity to have Levi and Donald speak about the works.
