Amid hundreds of screaming students, delegates cut the ribbon to Carlton Comprehensive Public High School’s new gymnasium on Thursday.

Able to seat more than 1,200, Saskatchewan Rivers School Board chair Barry Hollick noted during his remarks that it “makes sense” for the province’s largest school to have the province’s largest gymnasium.

Its total cost of about $12.2 million was offset in part by the provincial government, which committed $8 million.

Shortly after a lengthy delegate-filled opening ceremony, the gymnasium opened for student use.

The gymnasium also opened just in time for the Saskatchewan Winter Games, which are a couple weeks away, Hollick noted, adding that the gymnasium will prove beneficial for not only the school but the community at large.

On top of the gymnasium itself, Hollick pointed to an area above the gym’s foyer, which within the next few months is expected to be filled with a brand new student fitness centre.

Check the Daily Herald website later today for more on the grand opening celebration.
