With more than 30 turkeys roasting in slow cookers, two large tubs of stuffing and countless pounds of potatoes facing a thorough mashing, Christmas Day Community Dinner preparations are well underway at St. Mary High School.

“The donations have been coming in like crazy,” volunteer John Dorion said. “We’re getting good community support from all kinds of people -- business people, corporations, community people -- it’s going really well.”

Although less than 10 volunteers were seen on Monday, about 30 were expected by Tuesday, and up to 100 on Wednesday -- a number that’s never too high, Dorion said, noting that there’s always something for volunteers to do.

In addition to those preparing and dishing out food, a myriad of volunteers will spread throughout the city, delivering food to people who aren’t mobile as well as driving people to and from St. Mary High School.

There will be plenty of good news stories throughout the day, Dorion said, noting that there’ll be plenty of reciprocation when it comes to the giving that takes place.

“What usually happens, too, is Christmas Day some families will come in and volunteer and bring their kids, and the kids come in and donate whatever they got for Christmas and give for the less fortunate,” he said.

“It’s really neat, when they do stuff like that it shows that Christmas spirit, is how I see it.”

The Christmas Day Community Dinner will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to anyone interested in showing up.

The dinner mainly attracts people who would otherwise spend the holidays alone and/or people who cannot afford a proper Christmas dinner.

Last Christmas saw more than 2,000 people served meals with all the trimmings, between deliveries and St. Mary High School.

Those interested in volunteering at the dinner can phone Isabelle Impey at 922-3071, and those who need a ride to or from the dinner, or who need a dinner delivered to them, can call either 763-9378 or 960-7825.
