Students at St. Mary High School are ready to show off their musical talents at the school’s annual winter concert.

Traditionally held near the end of the term, the concert features an eclectic range of songs performed by the school’s glee club, jazz band and concert band.

“We’re doing some Christmas songs as well as a lot of pop and rock stuff off the radio,” music teacher Kayleigh Skomorowski said.

“Because we work on the music from September onwards, the vast majority of it isn’t Christmas (music) -- just mainly to keep ourselves sane, show some variety,” she added.

This year’s winter concert will take place on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the school lecture theatre.

Of the three groups performing, two are curricular classes who meet every other day, while the jazz band is an extracurricular option whose members rehearse once a week.

Skomorowski noted the diversity of this year’s setlist.

“The Grade 9 concert band is doing Circle of Life from Disney’s The Lion King,” she said. “The senior band is doing a medley from Fiddler on the Roof … We do a full band with all the students Grade 9 through 12 and they’re doing a medley of numbers from the Pirates of the Caribbean, which they’re pretty excited about.

“The glee club’s doing a Christmas song called Breath of Heaven made popular by Amy Grant as well as some other pop songs, including Africa done by Toto.”

The jazz band will be performing a mix of jazz and rock tunes -- including Crazy Train and Green Onions -- with an improvisational sound halfway between the two styles.

“Imagine saxophones on guitar licks,” Skomorowski said.

Admission to the concert is $5 or free for children under 10. Tickets are available at St. Mary High School or at the door.
