A 16-year-old boy is dead after he was found in medical distress at the Prince Albert Youth Residence on Wednesday.
Details around the medical distress, including how staff was alerted to the situation, is part of an investigation, so are not currently available, corrections and policing representative Janice Wilby said on Thursday.
The youth died at Victoria Hospital at about 1:15 p.m. on Thursday after staff found him in medical distress at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
The youth was immediately taken to hospital, a Government of Saskatchewan press release notes.
The Prince Albert Youth Residence has an overall capacity of 26. On Wednesday, their count was 22, including 14 youth in open custody and eight remanded youth.
The deceased was one of the eight remanded youth, remanded on three counts of assault and one count of assaulting a probation officer.
As standard practice, the police, coroner’s office and the Saskatchewan Advocate for Children and Youth have been notified, and the Ministry of Justice will conduct its own internal investigation.
