P.A. residents still have one more opportunity to attend a free fit class being offered this week at a local massage and fitness centre.
The next free class at Eunique Massage & Fitness is set to take place this Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., following sessions earlier in the week on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Describing the sampler class, registered massage therapist Eunice Mooney noted the diverse influences that characterize her program.
“I’ve been a massage therapist for 22 years and I taught aerobics and fitness for many of those years, and I’ve seen the injuries and the maybe lack of understanding of how the body works,” Mooney said.
“After being in Thailand and studying with a few other people, I’ve developed a class that’s very gentle, but very powerful. We focus mainly on improving our posture and our balance and our functional movement, and all the while having some fun.”
What Mooney refers to as the “Eunique concept” combines cardiovascular exercise, strength training, stretching and stress reduction with traditional Chinese disciplines such as tai chi and qigong.
The primary focus, she says, is on improving a person’s core strengths and alignments.
“My slogan is ‘Still do it when you’re 80,” Mooney said. “The whole idea with this is to align correctly and lessen the forces on the joints and your muscles, so they’ll work effectively and you can still do it when you’re 80.”
A typical class begins with feet exercises using a special piece of equipment, after which students move on to tai chi and qigong-related moves with the help of a ball.
“That’s a hard thing to imagine until you see it,” Mooney noted. “Then we move into some aerobic and cardiovascular training, also using the ball and very specialized breathing techniques.”
After a spot of yoga and floor work that emphasizes stretching and working with joint mobility, classes end with a form of meditation in which students lie down and concentrate on deep breathing and relaxing.
Starting next Monday, regular classes will be available on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., as well as Wednesdays from 10 p.m. to 11:15 p.m.
Participants may choose from a range of class options, whether a certain number of months at a time or a certain number of classes per week.
“It’s very flexible that way and there’s a whole rate system that goes along with that,” Mooney said. “Or they can come class by class and there’s a rate for that as well.”
