More than $150,000 in grants is coming to Prince Albert and area as part of the first-ever Community Vitality Program.

Birch Hills, Marcelin, Christopher Lake, Blaine Lake, Shellbrook, St. Louis and Prince Albert are among the 115 recipients provincewide. A total of $152,648 is coming to the area. Tracey Mann, executive director for the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF), said that smaller communities were the target for a reason.

“We know particularly in smaller communities that they have limited access to resources, and generally what we know is that people are very active and involved as volunteers in their communities … We want to support those volunteer efforts.”

Connie Farber, the executive director of the Indian Métis Friendship Centre in Prince Albert, said the $30,249 it received is going to be a great help in renovating and expanding the kitchen.

“All of our appliances are tired … We have to be current and we have to have the things that are needed,” she explained. “We are looking forward to doing a lot more with the added space.”

There is no timeline for the renovations, as the grant is a matching grant. The friendship centre is looking at making sure they have the funds to complete the project.
