Toronto FC boss questions player fitness, says future of DPs will be reviewed

TORONTO - Toronto FC flies to Florida on Friday to continue its pre-season, with questions about some players' fitness and the future of its designated players.

President and general manager Kevin Payne says he has been disappointed at the fitness level of some players.

He also says that the club is reviewing the status of designated players Torsten Frings, Danny Koevermans and Eric Hassli — all of whom are coming off injuries.

Payne says the three designated players and defenders Darren O'Dea and Richard Eckersley take up a large chunk of the MLS team's salary cap.

Payne says the club hopes to announce a player signing this week with three more expected, adding the team is looking for young, energetic attackers, with an eye to Central and South American markets.

The club also confirms that the home opener March 9 against Sporting Kansas City will be played at Rogers Centre.
