ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Strong gusts mixed with blowing snow led to downed power lines and electricity outages in communities across Newfoundland on Thursday evening.

According to Newfoundland Power's website at 10 p.m., there were outages in the St. John's area as well as in central Newfoundland.

Other areas of the province also were without power.

The website blames "severe weather" conditions for the outages.

Environment Canada was calling for the winds to blow at 60 kilometres per hour, with gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour in St. John's.

The conditions are expected to clear somewhat on Friday.
