LAKE LOUISE, Alta. - A popular hiking trail in Banff National Park has been closed after a grizzly bear attacked and killed a small dog.

Parks Canada spokeswoman Brianna Burley says the attack happened in the Skoki Valley area, near the Lake Louise ski hill, on Thursday.

A hiker was scrambling off the trail, above the treeline, with his Jack Russell dog when the adult grizzly attacked.

Burley says the hiker — an employee of Skoki Lodge — tried to scare off the bear by yelling, throwing rocks and his backpack at the bear.

The hiker was not hurt.

Burley says the trails and the area will be closed until further notice.
