BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors believe Justin Bieber is more than a sweet voice with slick dance moves.
The ECHL team has offered the Canadian pop phenom an amateur tryout contract for the upcoming hockey season.
The team says in a news release it hopes the five-foot-seven "slender built superstar can provide a rookie presence" for the Condors.
The club also says his "sick flow will fit right in with a Condors team known for their style."
A team spokesman said the club contacted Bieber's agent about the offer but as of Tuesday afternoon there had been no response.
Kevin Bartl didn't seem overly optimistic Bieber would take the team up on its offer.
"I don't think he'll be leaving his lucrative singing career to play hockey any time soon," he said. "But you never know."
The minor-league team is getting plenty of attention online since announcing the offer. According to Bartl, the Condors' website crashed within 30 minutes of the news release being issued Tuesday afternoon.
The Condors have been known for creative marketing in the past, holding a "Charlie Sheen Night'' in March 2011.
The 18-year-old Bieber is a huge hockey fan. The native of Stratford, Ont., skated with the Toronto Maple Leafs during a practice at the Air Canada Centre last December.
Condors head coach Matt O'Dette seemed impressed with what he saw.
"Very rarely do you see this combination of skill and toughness," he said in a release. "I've scouted some video of him online skating with my hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and I think he could provide some elusive speed up front for us."
The Condors even say they have reserved Bieber's favourite No. 6.
