Nova Scotia liquor sales up about $2.5 million from 2011 in second quarter

HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's Crown liquor company is reporting a slight increase in sales in its second quarter.

From July 2 to Sept. 30, the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation recorded sales of $169 million compared to $166.5 million in the same period in 2011.

The corporation's net income was nearly $66 million, up about $700,000 from last year.

CEO Bret Mitchell says new packaging sizes on major beer brands helped drive up sales.

But the total volume of alcohol sold in the second quarter is down 0.5 per cent from the same time last year.

Wholesale sales, such as those at bars, restaurants and stores, were $31.1 million, a decrease of about one per cent.
