ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The Fish Food and Allied Workers Union has rejected a proposal by Ocean Choice International that would see the fish plant in Fortune, N.L., run year round.
The proposal received unanimous support from plant workers in a vote last week, but the deal hinges on acceptance from the union.
The company wants to ship up to 75 per cent of its yellowtail quota out of the province unprocessed.
The remaining 25 per cent would remain in the province, employing up to 110 people for 35 to 45 weeks out of the year.
Fisheries Minister Darin King says he met with the company and the union earlier this week.
King says he is trying to bring both sides together to work out their differences, but he finds it frustrating to deal with resistance from all sides.
