TORONTO - A 24-year-old Toronto woman is in a coma in a Croatian hospital and her family and friends are now trying to raise enough money to bring her home.

Anna Leibenko was travelling with some friends in Europe this month when she slipped off a catamaran, the ”Adriatic Queen,” in Croatian waters.

A website set up to raise the funds needed to transport Leibenko to Canada says she fell three meters, hit her head on a ledge and fell into the ocean.

Leibenko was taken by helicopter to a neurosurgery hospital in Split, Croatia, where she remains in a coma with internal brain bleeding and head and face fractures.

The website says Leibenko did not have travel insurance and her family and friends can’t afford the cost of her treatment and an air ambulance from Croatia to Toronto.

Almost $34,000 has been raised so far toward $93,000 cost of an air ambulance and the cost of treatment is still undetermined.

The website also says Leibenko must remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days, and if her condition improves, she will be transferred to a Toronto hospital.
