Humbled by all the attention he’s received since being named Citizen of the Year, the flood of positivity for community steward Harris May continued on Friday.
With the who’s who of Prince Albert in attendance for a dinner in May’s honour, his community-minded efforts were commended during a series of speeches.
When finally given a chance to speak, May capped things off by reminding those in attendance that there are countless other volunteers in the community.
“There are so many well-deserving citizens in Prince Albert,” he told the crowd of well wishers. “We could probably do a citizen of the day.”
But, Friday was May’s night, and many speakers took the opportunity to speak highly of May’s contributions to the community.
A volunteer contributor to many organizations throughout the city, May’s work at the Prince Albert Historical Society has stuck out as central in recent years, and included his central role in organizing last year’s Centennial of Flight Air Show.
Congratulations came in many forms, and from as distinguished places as the Saskatchewan Premier’s office, with Prince Albert Carlton MLA Darryl Hickie relaying congratulations from Brad Wall.
Perhaps the most touching speech came from May’s wife, Diane, who lovingly read a laugh-filled acrostic poem she’d written about her husband, beginning with three words for “H” -- honest, helpful and historical.
“Harris, you have been an inspiration not only to the community, but to your family,” she said at the close of her speech.
“You’re a fine leader and you’re very humble when it comes to being in the spotlight -- never pushes his way forward. So, on behalf of all of your family and extended family, we love you and we’re proud of you.”
History is important, May said, noting that he’s just one of many volunteers who help keep the Prince Albert Historical Society, and other organizations, running.
“People matter,” he said. “Their stories matter, and people deserve to be remembered, even if it’s only that they ran to second base over the pitcher’s mound.”
May was named 2012 Prince Albert Citizen of the Year in December, during a presentation that caught him off-guard.
At the Prince Albert Historical Museum for a cheque presentation photo opportunity, a crowd of supporters caught him off-guard with the announcement.
Prince Albert’s Citizen of the Year award is a joint effort between the Prince Albert Daily Herald and the Prince Albert Kinsmen Club.
