The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has released new figures showing a 53.6 per cent increase in urban housing starts between November 2011 and November 2012 -- the highest growth rate of any province.
The bulk of the increase occurred in multiple units, which increased 92.9 per cent on a year-by-year basis from 254 units to 490 units.
Single family units also rose 16.4 per cent from the previous year.
Saskatchewan government officials said the combination of a growing population and strong economy was a boon for the province’s construction sector, and that the increase in multiple units will provide more affordable housing options.
