The driver of a vehicle reported stolen was observed fleeing the scene after crashing the car into a tree late on Sunday.

Police responded at 10:18 p.m. to a report of a motor vehicle accident in the 2400 block of Second Avenue West, where a Toyota Camry had struck a tree in a yard.

A witness observed the vehicle travelling eastbound at a high rate of speed only to control, leave the roadway and hit the tree. The driver, who was described as a male wearing a black jacket and blue jeans, then fled the area.

Police Dispatch advised that the damaged vehicle had just been reported stolen from the Victoria Hospital. The owner had left the vehicle running while he assisted a family member into the Emergency Department and returned only to find the car gone.

The Police Canine Unit was unavailable for a track. Police continue to investigate the theft and related vehicle accident.
