The Paws for a Cause walk on Sunday raised more than expected for the Prince Albert SPCA.

Leann Roberts, assistant manager at the SPCA said she is not certain why the haul was so good this year.

“I don’t know why, I think it was that we had a lot more mature, over the age of 18 (pledgers this year).”

A total of $19,524.77 was raised through the hard work of more than 50 pledge-walkers, who brought in 50 pledge sheets.

More than 60 people plus their furry four-legged companions made the actual hour-long walk through Little Red River Park.

Despite raising almost double what they usually do, the annual average being $10,000 to $12,000, Roberts says that it will all get used in short order.

“There won’t be any holdover,” Roberts said.

The funds are reserved specifically for the investigation of animal cruelty cases and especially for medical care such as neutering, spaying and injury recovery.

Paws for a Cause and the annual spring garage sale are the SPCA’s two major fundraisers.
