Stuck in the mud
Students call it the "boonies" or the "hole," but whatever it's called, a makeshift parking lot north of the SIAST academic centre is annoying students stuck parking there.

Now as a former student, and may very well comeback to defend the Instructors, falculty, and Institution.Don't you think SIAST knows about the parking puddle. But,how would feel in thier shoes. In order to pave the area in question. We the students will have hike our tutions in order to pay for it.To current student in the NRT Program,You should be in favor in leaving the area i n question alone. But due to inconvienence. And the large student population today. The Federal,Provincial, and our Municipality must step into the picture as well.I can't imagine what the total cost will be.Leave our Instructors, and teachers out of it.

Hmm..I am currently going to SIAST and I park usually on the front of the SIAST building on the road.. even then I have to leave home at 8 to park there because if i leave around 8:30 they are all taken up and would be forced to park in the back mud pit.. and my classes dont start til 9 so i'm usually sitting in my car in the front of SIAST from 8:15 til 8:50.. when i could be using that time to get ready in the morning... so the parking situation does suck.. they'd rather put up houses than address this issue which should have been solved long time ago.. but what evs.. im done in December anyway! haha.

Ahhh, yes, SIAST's lovely mud pit! I use to be a student at SIAST Woodland Campus two years ago, the parking there is horrible. There was only about 20 people in my class that year and there was at least two or three of us that would get stuck daily when it was a mud pit in the Spring and Fall.

I went to SIAST in 97 and it was a well-used mudpit back then. You'd think that the school would have figured out that they need more viable parking spaces in that 12 years, but obviously not. Kinda makes you wonder what other essentials they're leaving out in the name of education .

Are they counting the lot between the main SIAST building and the UofS extension building? That lot is basically taken up by the university students, there's just the one paved lot by the townhouses for students in the main building. Or was that removed because of the townhouses? I haven't been back there since I graduated a couple years ago.

As a former SIAST Woodland student, I frequently parked in the mud lot with my old mid '80s lead sled and didn't really have that much of a hard time getting around it. I never complained about it seriously, as it was free and I knew my University student brother didn't have that luxury. I also rode the bus occasionally too, mostly in the winter. I'm just saying don't complain too much about free things, because improvements will end up digging into your wallet.

Actually the bus system isnt that difficult in the city, the buses go to all areas of the city with one main transfer station and they stop at two different locations of SIAST, so get on a bus, do one transfer if need be and get dropped right off at the doors, doesnt sound that difficult does it, not any harder then anywhere else. But perhaps, to the ppl on here suggesting the bus, have you thought that maybe some of the students going to school that are actually paying for their own education may not be able to afford the 45 dollar a month bus pass and the money for school, rent, groceries etc plus plate the vehicle they do have that you are suggesting they dont drive to school....not everyone gets money handed to them to go to school, its ridiculous for siast to have 1400 students and say they accomodate parking for 300! Not even half! thats pathetic, in high school where ppl dont have licenses or cars maybe but for adult education its a little ridiculous. And of course ppl use the bus in S'toon, they make you pay for a bus pass so why not use the bus!

since when is a place to park your car an essential of education? SIAST students are lucky to have the amount of parking they do have compared to total student numbers. Try going to Kelsey or the U of S in Saskatoon and you'd learn to ride the bus!

The teachers have a pretty nice parking lot. I think it would just be a natural part of an educational facility, having decent parking... Unless it was just getting on its feet, still in the construction phase or something. But since this has been going on for years it seems SIAST has no intention of ever overcoming its we're just a little college in the north mentality. So I don't think they can ask their students to study as hard or act as professionally as students in a big city college with paved parking would...
What a joke! -

U cant compare Woodland in PA to the UofS. There is a big wasted area behind the condos at Woodland. Get decent parking for the students then the students can have one less thing to worry about!!!

Everyone has missed a total group of students here. Im a single parent trying to get an education and make something of my life. It is difficult to get to the daycare and then when i get too school cant find a spot to park. the bus is not an option for me. i dont see new condos being built at the UofS. all we're asking for is decent parking. when i C condoes being built then hmmmm ... maybe someone can fix the muddy h*ll hole of a parking lot. if the lot is owned by the city then hmmmm ... maybe SIAST can support their students (customers) and get after the city to clean it up. hmmmm ... for a bunch of educated people it seems that U can think of building condoes and cant think of cleaning up a mud hole parking lot.

I am a current SIAST student, and i do agree that we should be doing something about that sad, sad mud pit. However, it should be noted that certain individuals who were ripping around the lot in big trucks, doing dougnuts (you know who you are) did nothing to improve the state of the aformentioned sink hole. I also drive a larger vehicle, but I try to be respectful of those less fortunate students driving smaller ones without 4 wheel drive.
Also, in regards to the individual from Saskatoon who suggested taking the bus ... have you tried to do that in Prince Albert? It's a rather sad affair in this city ... and I'm pretty sure our transit system couldn't accommodate very much of the SIAST student body. -

Yes it sucks to have to park in a mudhole, however that mudhole is city property and you are taking a chance....think - if the city wanted to they could ticket everyone parking there also....and way to go b , I agree totally, the city owns the lot and SIAST wants to split the cost of paving a city owned lot with the city....good luck on that. Remember everyone, the city obviously does not have the budget money this year to finish paving roads - have you travelled on the 'new and improved 28th street west' road? Did you notice that it is not completed and it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out it will not have another lift put on this year and probably not next year either? Remember our huge new soccer centre is how many millions over-budget and nowhere near completion and will also likely cost the city tax payers money and you would like the city to cough up the land and split the cost to pave it? Everyone would prefer and want free parking, but times have changed and that rarely happens. Remember driving is a privilege not a right same with free parking. When SIAST was built, there were not that many people driving -hence the limited parking.

Try the Exhibition grounds?? You will have to walk a few feet but it would probably be good for getting rid of your KD & Spam fueled ample bellies.
By the way, if you are realy successful after your studies and happen to land a job in downtown Calgary, you will dream of the good old days and that free mud hole as you peel $400 to $500 per month out of your wallet for parking in Calgary -

First, I acknowledge that there are many modes of transportation available to SIAST students such as walking, riding the bus, or biking. However, those of us who drive have our own valid reasons for doing so. For example, some students need to take children to daycare before school and/or pick them up afterwards. Many students live outside of Prince Albert and drive long distances to attend classes.
The issue is that there are more students driving to SIAST each day than there are adequate parking spaces available for them. The field designated for alternative parking is unusable much of the year due to mud, snow and ice.
A lot of professionals in our area will attend SIAST at some point, as will many of our children. It would benefit our city to provide the infrastructure, including adequate parking facilities, needed at SIAST. -

The parking lot is really horrible. It hasn't changed in years!!! It's sad that local students who pay a large amount to go to school don't have the basic necessities, such as a parking lot!!!!!!!!!! I realise the importance of the new student housing, but we have lived without it for all these years. Why do we suddenly need it now? The parking lot is by far needed more!!! :(

Further to my previous comment, I would like to add that it may be an option to consider paving the field in question and charging a fee for its use. I haven't heard this possibility mentioned, but I imagine it might be an acceptable solution. The same unpaved field is used by paying customers for parking during the PAEX.

Hey, smart students?? See up there where it says, City Owned Parking Lot?
Yeah I would quit the constant whining and smarten up. Siast doesn't OWN that lot, so even the fact that they are willing to dole out HUGE cash just to fix it matching the city says a heck of alot about the adminstration's caring.
And let me tell you what. When the lot IS paved and then becomes a fee lots because SOMEONE has to pay for it, I don't want to hear one single whine.
Do you think that Siast constructed the housing there? Nada. Go and see who ones it, and WHO LIVES THERE. Then see how you look at admin again.
Its just like PA to whine and complain but never to do anything about it.
Why doesn't the Student's Union cough up some cash to at least make an effort to help, instead of more and more pub nights.
You decide which is more important.
p.s. I went there as well, awhile back and the mere thought of complaining about it wasn't even considered. We were happy to be able to park for FREE! Anywhere.
