REGINA -
More than half the drivers in
Saskatchewan are going to pay more for their auto insurance.
The provincial cabinet has approved a request from Crown-owned Saskatchewan Government Insurance to raise rates by 4.2 per cent, on average, effective Nov. 1.
The province says 55 per cent of vehicle owners under SGI will pay about $55 more a year, while another 13 per cent will see their rates drop by about $21, with the remainder seeing no change.
Motorcycle drivers will suffer the biggest hit, paying 24 per cent more under increases previously approved by Saskatchewan's rate review panel.
Crown Investments Corporation Minister June Draude says the hike is needed because some drivers have been paying too much for coverage, while others have not been paying enough.
Draude also says the government is considering looking at the rebalancing issue on a more regular basis to ensure everyone is paying a fair rate.
