The head of a national children's advocacy group emphasized the importance of properly identifying the baby boy abandoned at Wal-Mart Monday.
Grant Wilson, president of the Canadian Children's Rights Council, said as the boy grows, he will want to know who he is and where he comes from.
This means establishing who both the mother and father are, according to Wilson.
Knowing the father's identity would also give him a chance to play an active role in the child's life if he so chooses.
Properly identifying people at birth is also important in establishing medical records, according to Wilson, as genetics can play a role in a person's predisposition to disease.
Though the mother of the boy came forward to police Friday, Wilson criticized police and the government for not using enough resources to find her quickly.
He also chastised media for labeling the mother as a woman, when she could have been a teenager.
Wilson said this may have hindered the process of finding her, because people may have been looking for the wrong person.
