CALGARY - Humane societies in Alberta are warning dog owners to beware of how hot weather can hurt or even kill their pet.
The Calgary Humane Society and city bylaw services have issued a Pet Heat Alert to warn against leaving pets unattended inside of vehicles for even a few minutes.
The groups say the temperature inside a vehicle can soar to 50 degrees in just a few minutes and that such high temperatures can cause critical damage to a dog's nervous system, heart, liver and brain.
The City of Calgary says so far it has responded to 48 cases of dogs being locked in hot vehicles this summer.
The Edmonton Humane Society is also warning people about exercising their dogs in hot weather.
The society says even a simple walk in hot weather can be extremely stressful for a dog if it is too hot for the pet to cool down.
