MOOSE JAW -

A prolonged layoff and shutdown at Saskatchewan's only beef processing plant has turned into a lockout.

XL Foods in Moose Jaw issued temporary lay-off notices to all of its 200 employees in April.

The company said at the time it planned to reopen the plant in September.

However, on the weekend XL Foods notified the United Food and Commercial Workers Union that it is not going to reopen the plant until after it reaches a new contract with workers.

The union says there is a contract offer on the table and members will be voting on it on Sunday.
