YORKTON - Sask
atchewan honey producers can now get compensation for damage caused by bears.
The province is putting an extra $200,000 a year into its Wildlife Damage Compensation Program to help beekeepers.
Producers will be able to claim for damage to hives and huts, loss of honey production, as well as the loss of bees and leaf cutter bee larvae.
Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud (BEN-rod) says losses from bears is more than lost equipment, it includes the lost honey and costs to replace the honeybees.
The compensation program also compensates farmers for damages to crops, stacked hay, silage, ales market gardens, tree nurseries and sod farms from deer, antelope, elk, moose, bison, ducks, geese and sandhill cranes.
