The 2009 Winter Festival has begun and the new Mr. and Mrs. Winter Festival have been named. Arnold and Merle Chester were surprised but excited to find out Wednesday afternoon that they were the newly appointed Mr. and Mrs. Winter Festival.
"I have been working with the Winter Festival for years," said Arnold. "But I never thought I would ever be up for this."
As Mr. and Mrs. Winter Festival, the Chesters will make appearances and attend most of the Winter Festival festivities. They will also visit clubs, nursing homes, and daycare centres.
"We have been involved with this festival ever since it started," said Merle. "I am looking forward to attending the indoor events, but I know Arnold is looking forward to the dogsledding."
Over the years, many deserving couples have been honoured for their years of service by being awarded this distinguished title. The couple is selected through a nomination process and the Prince Albert Lions Club has the difficult task of picking only one couple.
"They are a very deserving couple," said Jane Smith, president of the Winter Festival.
"Arnold was a Winter Festival director for many years and they both dedicated many hours of their time to volunteering for the festival in the past."
On Sunday, Arnold and Merle Chester will be honoured at a tea at the Heritage Centre at 2 p.m. Anyone wishing to attend this event and congratulate our new Mr. and Mrs. Winter Festival is welcome.
