Students at W. J. Berezowsky School are on track for healthier lives, with school faculty setting student health as a priority this year.
The prioritization of health was firmly established on Friday, when the school received one of two Mosaic Extreme School Makeover Challenge Awards given out across the province.
“They’re creating a healthy learning environment for their students,” Breakfast for Learning representative Kelly Berlinic said.
“They’ve done that through nutritional improvements and physical fitness, as well as just creating an environment that promotes overall health and wellness for the students.”
Although the school has already made several changes to create a healthier atmosphere, principal Bonnie Lucas said that much more will come.
In addition to an increased focus on sports and athletics, the school plans on refining its offerings at the school canteen to make it a healthier place to eat.
Next week, students will help harvest a garden they grew with help by Pine Grove Correctional Centre inmates.
“We’ll be looking at having the students make soups and things like that, and we’ll freeze them and then on a daily basis we’ll have hot soup in the canteen,” Lucas said.
Students took a break from classes on Friday morning to recognize the school’s accomplishments, including their Mosaic Extreme School Makeover Challenge award, which includes $5,000 in prize money.
“They can put that to any use they see fit, because the school that’s wise enough to win the award in the first place is wise enough to spend it,” Berlinic said.
Lucas said that although the school hasn’t decided how the funds will be spent, it’s sure to be used in a capacity that benefits student health.
Saskatchewan Rivers School Division board member Grant Gustafson joined other dignitaries in congratulating the students.
“You will be able to learn better when you’re healthier and you won’t spend as much time sick,” he told the students.
“You’ll have a lot more things for time playing with friends and family, and those are some of the most important things in life.”
