The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is reporting a case of anthrax in a cow that died Friday in the Rural Municipality of Torch River, about 50 kilometers east of Prince Albert.
Sandra Stephens, an agency spokesperson, said results from a test conducted by a Prince Albert-area veterinarian were sent to a Prairie Diagnostic Services laboratory in Saskatoon, where the case was confirmed.
After the CFIA was notified, the agency ensured the infected cow's remains were disposed of and the rest of the 100-some cattle in the herd were placed under a three-week quarantine.
Stephens said the herd was vaccinated in the spring, but thought either the infected cow had been missed, or the vaccine did not work.
"There is no vaccination that is absolutely 100 per cent," she said.
Stephens said the agency will supply a second round of vaccinations for the herd, which will remain under quarantine until the three-week period has lapsed.
"If there are no further mortalities, we will release the quarantine," she said.
The last case of anthrax was in May, where one cow in Lloydminster died.
